FAQ

Your election questions answered

I’m sure that you have lots of questions about the PCC elections on the 5th May. I thought that I will give some answers to some of the questions that I have received when I have met with members of our communities.

Will council tax go up if I am elected?

The Gloucestershire Constabulary is funded in two ways – from the tax you pay to the Government and from your council tax. The total budget is £106 million.

I have agreed a plan with the Chief Constable that will see the number of police officers increase from 1060 to 1100  over the next four year period. Plans are also in place to double the number of Special Constables. The level of government funding has been frozen for the next four years and the Chancellor has recommended Commissioners fund the gap from local taxation.

To deliver the increasd numbers of police officers and managed central government cuts,  increases of between 1 & 2% each year are likely to be necessary.

Since taking office I have set four budgets’

  1. 2013/14     Rise of 2% as exiting Police Authority had frozen the precept but set a budget that assumed an increase had been made.
  2. 2014/15     Rise of 2% to maintain Police & PCSO numbers and set up cyber crime unit which now sees Gloucestershire Police and the leading force in England & Wales.
  3. 2015/16     Precept frozen. No increase.
  4. 2016/17      Rise 1.2% to fund Chief Constables Plan for 40 more officers.

Am I going to protect the police front line?

Yes. My plan is to increase the number of police officers from 1060 to 1100 and double the number of Special Constables during my next term of office.

I also want to see them well equipped, highly motivated and smart.
